I Miss The Days When You Actually Needed To Have Talent To Be Famous

Posted by Crayzon Deeyon on October 8, 2009 at 9:21 AM

Julia Beverly creator of The O-Zone Magazine posted an interesting topic on her Facebook page when she wrote:  "I miss the days when you actually had to have talent to be famous."

As the day went on, and she added additional posts, I discovered that she was speaking more on Reality TV than she was speaking to Hip Hop Music.  However, most of the people commenting on her post took her observation to be speaking on music because of her status at the O-Zone Magazine. I expressed my views on the subject, and gave a response to one who brought my name up in his post.  This is the record of my two posts on the subject.  Let me know what you think!

Original Post 1:  My Views On Talent!

Question, do you think everyone the media chooses to cover has talent? And, if they don't-- why does the radio, magazines and TV cover them? Why don't the media outlets cover the truly talented? What I believe is everyone has talent, but many have not taken the time to cultivate the raw abilities they have. They are thrown out there, looking at what the record companies want-- believing certain content, in the rhymes, is what will help them make it! Maybe it is not about talent, but it is about the listening public becoming tired of hearing the same content repackaged-- and The Geto Boyz, NWA & Schoolly D did it better the first time! It's time for the next generation of rappers/mc's to upgrade the lyrics with new content-- push the record companies (major and independent) to want to promote and market something more than what we are hearing now!! And then those acts who many believe don't have talent will show the listening public what they really have in new fresh robust flow!

Post 2: In Response To A Fellow Poster

The DJ/Producer drives Hip Hop now! I remember a few years ago, magazines wrote on the demise of the DJ as a pivotal figure in HipHop-- how the MC had taken the place of the DJ. Now it has returned to the DJ/Producer driving Hip Hop Culture. (When I say Hip Hop I mean the full complete Diaspora: East to West, North to South, and overseas.) The DJ not only makes cds with exclusive music, but he or she creates beats, finds young rappers to make the next dance craze, and packages up the group for presentation to the next record label looking for the next non-political hit! What's happening now is like how the record labels, in the late 50's, got a hold of the rhythm-n-blues (rock-n-roll) and began to make "teen idols." Artists who were less offensive to the adults. They would still be complained about, but the labels had control over them, and the money could be made from a pre-fabricated/packaged artist who were disposable. It's the same today. It's become popular culture to say the b and h word, talk about sex on the dance floor-- as long as it is watered down. But The GetoBoyz' "Gangsta Of Love" still wouldn't pass the censor test, and the record is still a better record than what is going today!! And, here is the kicker, the youth would act in alarm to hear what Scarface, Bushwick and Willie D describe on the record! I liked it better when the music was authentic, and not a gimmick.
