Low Self Esteem Issues

Stacey Bell from WJW Fox 8 News asked this question:

Next month, I'm hosting an event at the YMCA. One of the panel discussions will focus on young girls and low self esteem issues, so I've got a question. Do you know anybody who struggles with low self esteem? If so, what exactly is their stuggle, is it looks, weight or just the feeling they aren't good enough? We're trying to generate topics of conversation for our panel next month. Talk soon, Stacey

I answered her question like this:

It's the images they see on TV. Black girls' hair isn't long enough, White girls' skin isn't tanned enough! Whatever the opposite is, of a group of people, is what is pushed to them as a beauty standard.

What would happen if all of the African-American female news anchors around the city, and the country went totally natural? It would be an esteem builder for young girls coming up, but the bosses wouldn't like it. I've heard it's considered threatening to some whites, in charge, to see African-American women wear their hair natural. But it would be a big self esteem builder for young girls and women growing up in Cleveland & other cities.

But, I don't recommend it! My wife and I had a discussion with three customers who came in to shop with me yesterday. They were intelligent young women, who could hold conversation about important issues concerning politics, inner city conditions, but when they got into the dozens-- the first thing that came out of their mouths was bad hair, and who had the weave that covered up the fact, the most, that one had very little hair! I asked where did you get that old time talk from? Hair is an issue, but what can you do?!
